How SMP Covers Bald Spots and Thinning Hair

Scalp micropigmentation works differently depending on the type of hair loss being addressed. Rather than a single approach, SMP is tailored to each individual’s pattern of loss:

For bald patches and advanced hair loss (men)

When the goal is to create the appearance of a closely cropped, shaved-head aesthetic across areas of significant or complete hair loss, SMP replicates the look of individual hair follicles through precise pigment dots. The result, when done well, is indistinguishable from a natural head shaved to a grade 0–1.

For thinning areas and diffuse hair loss

When hair is present but thinning — scalp visibility increasing, parting widening, density reducing — SMP places pigment between existing hairs to create the visual impression of greater density. This application is common in both men with crown thinning and women with female pattern hair loss.

For hairline definition

SMP can define or restore a natural-looking hairline, blending seamlessly from the forehead into the treated scalp area. Hairline design is one of the most skill-intensive aspects of SMP — a well-designed hairline looks completely natural; a poorly designed one does not.

For scar concealment

FUT (strip) transplant scars and other scalp scars are effectively concealed with SMP, which deposits pigment into the scar tissue to blend it with the surrounding scalp.

The SMP Process for Covering Bald Spots

The procedure is completed in 2–3 sessions spaced 10–14 days apart. Each session progressively builds the density and tone of the pigmentation:

Session

What Happens

Duration

Session 1

Base layer established; hairline or thinning zones mapped; initial pigment placed at lighter tone

2–3 hours

Session 2

Second layer added over healed Session 1; density built up; tone deepened to match natural hair

2–3 hours

Session 3

Final refinements; any uneven areas addressed; detail work on hairline or scar areas

1–2 hours

There is minimal downtime after each session. Avoiding water on the scalp, sun exposure, and sweating for the first 3–5 days post-session is important for pigment retention.

What Makes a Natural SMP Result

The quality of SMP results varies significantly between practitioners. The key factors that determine whether SMP looks natural or artificial include:

•      Pigment selection — the tone must match the client’s natural hair colour and skin undertone

•      Dot size and distribution — follicle replications must vary in size and spacing to mimic natural variation

•      Hairline design — natural hairlines are irregular, not ruler-straight; over-defined hairlines look artificial

•      Depth of pigment placement — too deep produces blue-green migration over time; too shallow fades quickly

•      Session management — building gradually over multiple sessions allows tone to be assessed and adjusted

SMP and Ongoing Hair Loss: What You Need to Know

SMP provides immediate cosmetic results but does not treat the underlying cause of hair loss. If you have existing hair alongside SMP, that hair will continue to be affected by androgenetic alopecia over time without treatment. This is why many clients combine SMP with regenerative scalp treatment:

•      SMP provides immediate visual impact in the treated area

•      Regenerative treatment — Plasma Scalp Boost, IndiScalp RF — protects and maintains the native hair surrounding the SMP area

•      This combined approach provides both immediate cosmetic results and long-term hair preservation
